The clothing of righteousness (Islam)

On the day that sin entered the world, the eyes of both Adam and Eve were opened, and they realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves in an attempt to hide their shame, because before they sinned they were not ashamed though they were naked (Taurat, Genesis 3:7 cf Qur’an, Surah Al A’raf 7:22).

However, God did not accept the coverings they had made for themselves; for nothing that man could do to cover the shame of his sin before God! Allah says in the Qur’an, “O ye Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover your shame, as well as to be an adornment to you. But the raiment of righteousness – that is the best. Such are among the Signs of Allah, that they may receive admonition! (Surah Al A’raf 7:26).

What is the raiment or clothing of righteousness? The Holy Scripture tells us “the LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them” (Taurat, Genesis 3:21). God had to select some innocent animals, slaughtered them, skinned them, and made clothes for Adam and Eve, putting them on them. In this way God taught Adam and Eve that the payment for sin is death!
