I. Life of Muhammad
A. Is personality proof?
1. What Muslims say
Muhammad’s personality is proof of his prophethood.
2. What Christians say
Personality is a very subjective thing. Even in our own experience we can find someone we really like but someone else may not feel the same way about that person. I am sure you will agree that there have been written both wonderful things as well as scandalous things about Muhammad. In my own readings of Muhammad’s life I found both good and bad things and is therefore not able to use this method to determine his prophethood.
It is true that a prophet of God should have a good personality. But the reverse is not true : that a person with good personality will have to be a prophet of God. Therefore one can use bad character to prove that someone is not a prophet of God but not good character to prove that he is a prophet of God.
Can you tell me whether you agree that just because a person has good character does not prove that he is a prophet. I am sure you have some friends with good character but that does not make them a prophet. If you agree with that, there is no need to dwell on whether the bad reports about Muhammad are true because even if we agree eventually that he has good personality, that fact alone does not prove that he is a prophet.
B. Prophetic call
1. Muhammad was at first unsure about his prophetic call
Haykel, one of the most respected biographers of Muhammad, wrote:
One day, while Muhammad was asleep in the cave, an angel approached with a sheet in his hand. The angel said to Muhammad, “Read.” Muhammad answered in surprise, “What shall I read?” He felt as if the angel had strangled and then released him and heard once more the command, “Read.” Muhammad’s reply was, “What shall I read?” Once more he felt the angel strangling and then releasing him, and he heard him repeat the command, “Read.”
This account is narrated by Aesha and found in the reliable hadiths of Bukhari and Muslim. Muhammad was so tramatized by the event that he went to his wife Khadija and asked her to wrap him up with a blanket. This she did until his trembling ceased.
We have to ask ourselves whether this form of coercion is consistent with what we know of a gracious and loving God.
2. Jesus was sure about His call right from the start
Even from childhood, Jesus was well aware of His call. Once when His parents could not find Him, He was surprised that they did not look for Him at the temple first.
(Luke 2:49 NIV) “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”
At the very start of His ministry, He went into the synagogue and declared Himself to be the promised Messiah.
(Luke 4:17-21 NIV) The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: {18} “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, {19} to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” {20} Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, {21} and he began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
C. Greed
By looting caravans and Jewish settlements he amassed great wealth for himself and his followers.
Muslims would say that Allah made looting lawful for Muhammad and therefore it is not a sin.
In the Bible, men of God have also been allowed by God to practise booty.
(Numbers 31:11-12) They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals, {12} and brought the captives, spoils and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho.
(Joshua 22:8) saying, “Return to your homes with your great wealth–with large herds of livestock, with silver, gold, bronze and iron, and a great quantity of clothing–and divide with your brothers the plunder from your enemies.”
(2 Chr 14:1-2 NIV) And Abijah rested with his fathers and was buried in the City of David. Asa his son succeeded him as king, and in his days the country was at peace for ten years. {2} Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God.
(2 Chr 14:13-15 NIV) and Asa and his army pursued them as far as Gerar. Such a great number of Cushites fell that they could not recover; they were crushed before the LORD and his forces. The men of Judah carried off a large amount of plunder. {14} They destroyed all the villages around Gerar, for the terror of the LORD had fallen upon them. They plundered all these villages, since there was much booty there. {15} They also attacked the camps of the herdsmen and carried off droves of sheep and goats and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.
Battles of muhammad
The battle of Badr too seems to have begun as a raid on a Meccan caravan. The raid is defended by Muslims on the grounds that the Meccans were already in the field and that certain Muslims and Jews in medina Medæna had been conspiring with them. It was, therefore, a pre-emptive raid. It is difficult to see, however, as Geijbels points out, what benefit the Meccans could possibly have derived from involving their laden caravans in a raid on the impoverished Muslim community.
D. Women
1. Muhammad had many wives and concubines.
Muhammad limits his followers to having four wives.
Surah 4:3. If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice.
Yet he himself took more than four wives and concubines. And he said that Allah allowed him to have more than four wives, but him only and not anyone else.
Surah 33:50. O Prophet! We have made lawful to thee thy wives to whom thou hast paid their dowers; and those whom thy right hand possesses out of the prisoners of war whom Allah has assigned to thee; and daughters of thy paternal uncles and aunts, and daughters of thy maternal uncles and aunts, who migrated (from Makka) with thee; and any believing woman who dedicates her soul to the Prophet if the Prophet wishes to wed her;- this only for thee, and not for the Believers (at large); We know what We have appointed for them as to their wives and the captives whom their right hands possess;- in order that there should be no difficulty for thee. And Allah is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Muhammad had about 13 wives, the exact number is still being debated.
a) Muslim explanation
Why Muhammad has more than 4 wives, but in surah 4:3 God make limited for only 4 wives? The answer is because the revelation came after he has more than 4 wifes. So, the rule came after that. About :”Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four”, This passage PERMITS POLIGAMY UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES. IT DOES NOT ENJOIN IT, NOR EVEN PERMIT IT UNCONDITIONALLY.
By the time the revelation came to Muhammad, There is a big battle between Muslims and Quraish from Mecca. So many women lost their husband, automatically they would become widows. How they earn money to feed their kids? This revelation came for men to allowed them marrying the widows with the permission of their first wife. We muslim allowed to have more than 1 wives with one condition: DON’T DO UNJUSTICE to all of them. You have to be fair. Can you do that? if not, don’t ever have more than 1 wife. “but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice”.
other Muslim saying that whether Muhammad was granted special permission from Allah to have more wives and that the restriction of four wives only apply to other Muslims and not him.
2. Took as wives women captured during war
Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 8, Number 367:
Narrated ‘Abdul ‘Aziz:
Anas said, ‘When Allah’s Apostle invaded Khaibar, we offered the Fajr prayer there yearly in the morning) when it was still dark. The Prophet rode and Abu Talha rode too and I was riding behind Abu Talha. The Prophet passed through the lane of Khaibar quickly and my knee was touching the thigh of the Prophet . He uncovered his thigh and I saw the whiteness of the thigh of the Prophet. When he entered the town, he said, ‘Allahu Akbar! Khalbar is ruined. Whenever we approach near a (hostile) nation (to fight) then evil will be the morning of those who have been warned.’ He repeated this thrice. The people came out for their jobs and some of them said, ‘Muhammad (has come).’ (Some of our companions added, “With his army.”) We conquered Khaibar, took the captives, and the booty was collected. Dihya came and said, ‘O Allah’s Prophet! Give me a slave girl from the captives.’ The Prophet said, ‘Go and take any slave girl.’ He took Safiya bint Huyai. A man came to the Prophet and said, ‘O Allah’s Apostles! You gave Safiya bint Huyai to Dihya and she is the chief mistress of the tribes of Quraiza and An-Nadir and she befits none but you.’ So the Prophet said, ‘Bring him along with her.’ So Dihya came with her and when the Prophet saw her, he said to Dihya, ‘Take any slave girl other than her from the captives.’ Anas added: The Prophet then manumitted her and married her.”
This action is allowed by the Quran in such verses as Surah 33:50 and 4:24.
3. Forced his adopted son to divorce his wife so that Muhammad could marry her
One of his wives, Zaynab of Jahsh, was originally Muhammad’s adopted son’s wife. Muslim tradition states that Muhammad asked Zaid to divorce his wife so that he could marry her. When Zaid refused, Muhammad said that he had a revelation from Allah which not only commanded Zaid to give up his wife to Muhammad but also decreed that there was no evil in a father-in-law taking his daughter-in-law away from his adopted son.
Surah 33: 36. It is not fitting for a Believer, man or woman, when a matter has been decided by Allah and His Messenger to have any option about their decision: if any one disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he is indeed on a clearly wrong Path. 37. Behold! Thou didst say to one who had received the grace of Allah and thy favour: “Retain thou (in wedlock) thy wife, and fear Allah.” But thou didst hide in thy heart that which Allah was about to make manifest: thou didst fear the people, but it is more fitting that thou shouldst fear Allah. Then when Zaid had dissolved (his marriage) with her, with the necessary (formality), We joined her in marriage to thee: in order that (in future) there may be no difficulty to the Believers in (the matter of) marriage with the wives of their adopted sons, when the latter have dissolved with the necessary (formality) (their marriage) with them. And Allah.s command must be fulfilled.
Muslims
Zaid used to be Muhammad’s maid (slave), but he treat him so kindly, and then he let him free as slave and he adopted him as a son. Because he used to be a slave, Pepople still treat him like a junk. Zainab was the daughter of the prophet’s own aunt, Umaimah, the daughter of Abd al Muthalib. The Prophet proposed Zainab to marry Zaid. First Zainab rejected because Zaid was Ex-slave. Then came surah 33:36. 033.036 YUSUFALI: It is not fitting for a Believer, man or woman, when a matter has been decided by Allah and His Messenger to have any option about their decision: if any one disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he is indeed on a clearly wrong Path. The verse tells about God’s decision for her to marry Zaid. (Proove no 1: that The Prophet had no plan to marry Zainab) Finally she agreed to mary Zaid. The marriage how ever not happy one. Zainab was harsh of temper and she never like Zaid on account of the stigma of slavery, which attach to his name. Differences Arose, Zaid expressed a desire to Holy Prophet of divorcing Zainab. He then advised Zaid not to divorce her.And gave her second chance. (Proove no 2: The Prophet didn’t eager to marry Zainab) Zaid gave her sacond chance, but it didn’t work. Finally he divorce her. Then came the revelation to for the Prophet to marry Zainab. Non Muslim said, Muhammad (pbuh) made his own word as a revelation. We can think. Muhammad (pbuh)is the big leader that time almost like a president. If he had big passion, he could marry cute, pretty, and virgin girl. Why should he chose a widow?. One of the Islam teaching, that adopted son is not the same as real son. We cannot use our name behind adopted son. So if I have adopted son, and they are divorce, I am allowed to marry his ex wife. But we cannot if he was my realblood son. Once that Muhammad(pbuh) wanted his name to put behind Zaid’s name. But revelation came to reject that old traditional Arab system. Verse 33:35, 36 is one unit case, about obeying Allah and the Prophet. Verse 37 through 40 about law that Adopted son is different that real son.
4. Muhamamd even married an underaged girl.
One of Muhammad wives, Aesha, was only nine years old when she married Muhammad. According to the hadiths, she was still playing with her dolls during that time.
Narrated ‘Ursa: The Prophet wrote the (marriage contract) with ‘Aisha while she was six years old and consummated his marriage with her while she was nine years old and she remained with him for nine years (i.e. till his death). (Sahih Bukhari 7.88)
a) Muslim explantion
Aisyah was a daughter of a close friend of the Prophet, Abu Bakr . She was a young kid with big body. She was very smart, clever, sharp memory and nice girl. Although she was only 9 years, her body almost likes 15 years girl. If you see her that time, you never guess that she was 9 years old. By that time she was 1.70 m tall or 5.6 feet. Yes, she was too young, but believe it or not, she could adjust her new life that fast with the Prophet, and the Prophet love her much than the other wives. According to authentic hadist narrator, one of the reason the Prophet married her was for solid relationship with his friend. By that time Muslims need one solid unity. Almost 50 percent of hadists, came from Aisyah. She was one of the famous narator, she could remember all of Prophet said and act, because she was still young with her fresh brain. This is one of good thing for prophet marrying young girl.
Christian
I am sure you would agree that if the Quran or hadith did not teach that Muhammad had such a young wife, it would be quite natural for anyone to be against such an act. In my country, it is considered a crime to have sexual relations with someone below 14. And it is irrelevant whether that person has a physically mature body or not. It is acknowledged that a person below the age of 14 would not have the spiritual maturity to be involved in that.
In your frank opinion, if the Quran or hadith did not teach that Muhamamd had such a young wife, would you react negatively to someone who did?
5. Had concubines.
Muslim explanation
The Prophet never had concubines. Because all of them were his wives and he married all of them in formal wedding.
6. His affair with Mary, his maid.
To prevent jealousy among his wives, Muhammad used to divide his time equally among them, spending one night with each of them in turn. But one day, when it was his wife Hafsa’s turn, she happened to be visiting her father. When she returned, she was surprised to find Muhammad in bed with Mary, the Coptic maid.
Muhammad then had another revelation. The revelation disallowed Muhammad’s previous promise to stay way from Mary and even reprimanded the wives for their lack of submissiveness to Muhammad. It even hinted that Muhammad could divorce all his wives and replace them with more submissive ones.
7. Jesus was never married; He dedicated his whole life towards serving God.
He did not even have a home. He moved about serving people’s needs.
(Matthew 8:20) Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
E. Revelation
According to Sura 33:37, God sanctions Muhammad’s desire to marry the divorced wife of his own stepson, “in order that (in future) there may be no difficulty to the believers in (the matter of) marriage with the wives of their adopted sons, when the latter have dissolved with the necessary (formality) (their marriage) with them. And God’s command must be fulfilled.”
One ex-Muslim wrote, “I vividly remember the first time that I came across that verse in my study of the Qur’an. I began to sob with great sorrow and shame. All my life I had been told that Muhammad was the most perfect and ideal moral example for mankind and yet the Qur’an had a good number of examples of how the “revelations” could be so self-serving to the prophet himself!”
F. Muhammad permitted for himself what is unlawful for others.
O Prophet! We have made lawful to thee thy wives to whom thou has paid their cowers; and those whom they right hand possesses out of the captives of war whom Allah has assigned to thee; and daughters of thy paternal uncles and aunts, and daughters of thy maternal uncles and aunts, who migrated with thee; and any believing woman who gives herself to the Prophet if the Prophet wishes to wed her – this only for thee, and not for the believers [at large]; We know what We have appointed for them as to their wives and the captives whom their right hands possess – in order that there should be no diff~culty for thee. And Allah is Oft Forgiving, Most Merciful (Surat Al-Ahzab 33:50).
It is not lawful for thee [to marry more] women after this, nor to change them for [other] wives, even though their beauty attract thee, except any thy right hand should possess [as handmaidens]: and Allah cloth watch over all (Surat Al-Ahzab 33:52).
G. Muhammad kept changing his mind
1. Where should one face when praying
So from whencesoever thou startest forth, turn thy face in the direction of the sacred mosque [the Kaaba]; and wheresoever ye are, turn thy face thither (Surat Al-Baqarah 2:150).
To Allah belong the East and the West: whithersoever ye turn, there is Allah’s face, for Allah is all-Embracing, All Knowing (Surat Al-Baqarah 2: 115).
2. Others
At first muhammad Muøammad was very impressed with the asceticism and the humility of Christian monks and regarded Christians as possible allies: ‘…And thou shalt assuredly find the closest of them in friendship towards the believers to be those who say: We are Christians! That is because some of them are priests and monks and because they are not arrogant’ (quran QurŸån 5.85).
However, as muhammad Muøammad’s knowledge of Christianity increased, he realized that the Christians did not believe in quite the same simple monotheism which he preached, and that they were unwilling to accept his preaching as truly prophetic. His feelings of friendliness towards the Christians therefore waned.
H. Method of evangelism
1. Jesus never used physical violence to force someone to accept Christianity
He wept for people who refused to follow the truth, not use violence against them to force them to follow His teachings.
When Peter took out his sword, Jesus told him to put it back in its sheath and insisted that violence was not the way of his ministry.
(Matthew 26:51-52) With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. {52} “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.
2. Muhammad used physical violence to force people to accept Islam
Surah 9:5. …fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, an seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
Muhammad asked his followers to use violence on unbelievers until they repent.
Muslim response
Did not Joshua do the same thing proving that this method of evangelism is legitimate?
Christian response
No. Joshua was commanded to overthrow and punish the Canaanites, but he was not commanded to convert them by the sword. Moreover, you who appeal so much to Reason should be able to explain how the command which you say was given to muhammad was consonant with reason and justice. You assert that God hates hypocrites so much that the lowest pit of hell has been assigned to them; and yet you tell us that God sent muhammad with the sword to make men hypocrites. For a man who embraces islam without proof, and merely to save his life, must evidently be a hypocrite.
Compulsion in religion in the Bible?
(2 Chr 15:12-13 NIV) They entered into a covenant to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul. {13} All who would not seek the LORD, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman.
Notes
Muhammad’s sexuality The sexuality of Muhammad is a rather contentious area for most Muslims who believe that the sexual rules practiced by Muhammad and his followers were simply a fact of those days in which he lived, and we must see him within that context.
The argument by Muslims is that during the “Holy Wars” when many men were killed, polygamy, for instance, was a justifiable provision for the widows. Yet, according to notes in “Sahih Muslim” III, pg.941, in all the 82 hostilities during the lifetime of Muhammad, only 259 Muslims lost their lives. Muhammad moved to Mecca with 10,000 men. How many of them would have had a chance of marrying even one widow? 2%! (current figures show an over-abundance of males due to amnio-synthesis tests, because of the girls who are aborted as a result of the findings: 20 million extra boys in China)
So what must we say about polygamy?
We are reminded of the words of Jesus who said, “He who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery” (Luke 16:18).
Because polygamy excludes devoted love, for love between the sexes is exclusive, it is degraded in essence to mere sexual fulfilment. No woman who loves her husband and wishes to be fully loved in return, can tolerate a partner (why else was Hafsa so upset with Muhammad when he took the Copt Mary to her bed?).
Take for instance a report from Aisha, Muhammad’s favorite wife (recorded in Mishkat 1, pg.210, and noted in the Hadiths collected by al-Bukhari and Muslim). This report quotes her as saying: “I used to backbite those (females) who offered themselves for the Messenger of Allah. So I asked: Does a woman offer herself? Then the Almighty Allah revealed: you (Muhammad) may put off whom you please of them, you may take to you whom you wish, and if you desire any whom you have separated, no blame attaches to you (from Sura 33:51). It seems to me that your Lord hastens to satisfy your desire.”
There is a further aspect: monogamy gives recognition, status and integrity to a woman. It is simplistic to argue that a polygamous society makes prostitution unnecessary. What about sexual fulfilment for the woman who has to share her husband with other wives? And what about the men who surely have to go without wives, because someone else (usually an older and thus richer man) has more than one?
When we look at the life of Muhammad we find an even larger emphasis on sex, and the fulfilment of carnal desires. Consider the following examples:
Thirteen Wives A Muslim man is permitted to marry up to four wives (excluding concubines) according to Sura 4:3. Muhammad had lived 25 years married to his first wife Khadija. After her death, which roughly coincided with the Hijra to Medina, he married about thirteen wives (the exact number is still debated). All except Aisha were widows or divorcees.
It is recorded in Sura 33:50, “O Prophet! We have made lawful to thee thy wives to whom thou hast paid their dowers, and those whom thy right hand possesses out of the prisoners of war whom Allah has assigned to thee; and daughters of thy paternal uncles and aunts, and daughters of thy maternal uncles and aunts, who migrated (from Mecca) with thee; and any believing woman, who dedicates her soul to the Prophet, and if the Prophet wishes to wed her-this only for thee, and not for the believers (at large)…”
This Sura gives Muhammad an unlimited number of women who lived in and around him, yet set strict restrictions on the other believers.
Zainab Zainab was the wife of his adopted son Zaid. When Zaid realized that Muhammad wanted her he divorced her so that Muhammad could have her. Sura 33:36-38 speaks of this affair (read).
Preference In Sura 33:51 we read, “Thou mayest put off whom thou wilt of them, and whom thou wilt thou mayest take to thee; and if thou seekest any thou hast set aside there is no fault in thee. So it is likelier they will be comforted, and not sorrow, and every one of them will be well-pleased with what thou givest her.”
According to Al-Hasan, this phrase means “that the Lord (may He be praised and exalted) allowed Muhammad to abandon or to sleep with any of his women, according to his wish.” Muhammad bestowed his love on Aisha, Hafsa, Um Salama and Zainab constantly and equally, and deferred the turn of five of his women (Ummu Habiba, Maymuna, Sawda, Juwayrid, and Safiyya). These he would visit according to whim (al-Zamakhshari’s commentary on the verse).
Mary According to tradition, Muhammad would take a rota with his wives, sleeping with each in their turn. One night, during Hafsa’s turn, she asked to visit her father, and Muhammad granted her request. While she was gone, however, Muhammad took Mary the Coptic slave-girl and slept with her in Hafsa’s bed. Hafsa returned, was enraged, and confronted Muhammad. He promised (on oath) not to touch Mary again if she would keep this a secret, and then promised that her father Umar would be his successor after Abu Bakr (according to al-Sira al- Halabiyya, vol.2).
Hafsah, however, told Aisha of the incident, and for a full month Muhammad had no dealings with any of his wives, living with Mary alone. Aisha berated Muhammad for his deceit, whereupon Muhammad was finally given the vision recorded in Sura 66:1, in order to defend himself (Mizanu’l Haqq, pg.330 and Mishkat II, pgs.680-681) (read Ali’s version of 66:1, plus footnotes).
This Sura says, “O prophet, why forbiddest thou what God has made lawful to thee, seeking the good pleasure of thy wives…?” Based on this ayya it seems that God is in the business of not only getting Muhammad out of his ‘jams’, but that God justifies unfaithfulness and deceit as well.
Aisha According to Sahih Muslim (pg.716) Aisha reported that Muhammad married her when she was seven years old, and she was taken to his house as a bride when she was nine, along with her dolls. When Muhammad died she was only eighteen.
Zealousness There are many accounts of Muhammad’s prowess with women. The traditions maintain that his marriages were primarily an act of compassion towards the widows whom he married. The evidence seems to say differently.
According to Al-Bukhari (1 pg.165) “the prophet used to visit all his wives in a round, during the day and night and they were eleven in number. I asked Anas, ‘Had the prophet the strength for it?’ Anas replied, ‘We used to say that the prophet was given the strength of thirty (men). And Sa’id said on the authority of Qatada that Anas had told him about nine wives only (not eleven).”
Ibn Sa’d backs this up as well where he states (1 pg.438) “The apostle of Allah, may Allah bless him, said: Gabriel brought a kettle from which I ate and I was given the power of sexual intercourse [equal] to forty men.”
It is odd that God would allow one of His prophets, the recipient of revelations, to indulge in lust and revel with women at his pleasure. Muhammad embraced those who captivated his mind and heart with their beauty, such as Aisha and Zainab, and treated the rest poorly.
Do we find any of the other prophets so obviously controlled by sex, or even engaged in this sort of lifestyle? Of course not! We would be appalled if a prophet would allow his carnal desires to so completely control him that he would even use the Word of God to escape from difficult circumstances (such as we noted with Zainab or the incident with Hafsa and Aisha).
